About Ātui’anga ki te Tango - Connect our Foundation
KO runs a programme called ‘Ātui’anga ki te Tango, which aims to connect our Cook Islands youth (intermediate to senior high school students) to their natural environment through scientific and culture-based learning. Students are exposed to scientific and traditional knowledge and complementary activities to enhance their understanding of the natural environment and associated traditional practices. The programme cover subjects ranging from Agriculture, Botany, Climate Change, Ecology, Marine Biology, Taxonomy, Research, Cook Islands traditional knowledge and practices, and life skills; exposing students to potential career pathways in various fields of study. We are looking for support to keep programme this on-going!

Since the inception of the ‘Ātui’anga ki te Tango senior programme that has been running since 2018 (both junior and senior programmes), the awareness of students of their environment has increased significantly. The seniors (since July 2019) have participated in coral reef monitoring surveys and also Operation Taramea that unexpectedly arose in July 2020 onward, which was critical to saving the reefs of Rarotonga from decimation (as historical outbreaks of the 1970s and 1990s on Rarotonga have taught us). KO strongly believes that in order for Cook Islanders to value and appreciate their environment and achieve the objectives of the Marae Moana, programmes such as ‘Ātui’anga ki te Tango are critical. Providing students with a strong foundation and core values embedded in our culture and environment is key to managing our natural resources sustainably; this mentality will also build a more resilient people in the face of climate change.
The youth are our indigenous guardians and leaders of our future. We must do all we can to empower them with the relevant knowledge to make the best decisions they can and protect our traditional knowledge, culture, and natural resources of this amazing place we call home. By supporting our NGO’s ‘Ātui’anga ki te Tango programme, this is a direct contribution to building and upskilling our children
